Wilson’s Orchard & Farm — Here’s What You Need to Know

Hey bride,

If you caught last week’s blog post, you already know I had high hopes for Wilson’s Orchard & Farm in Cumming, Iowa — and after going to the venue, I can honestly say it delivered. If you're a newly engaged Iowa couple starting your venue search, this one deserves a spot at the top of your list.

Let me walk you through what stood out most, what surprised me, and what I think you’ll want to know before booking a tour.

First Impressions: Light, Space, and Seriously Thoughtful Design

As a hairstylist who specializes in wedding hair for Iowa brides, I’ve worked in a wide range of venues — and I can tell you, Wilson’s Orchard & Farm stands out immediately. The moment I arrived, I noticed how open and calming the space felt. It’s the kind of environment that naturally helps ease those wedding-day nerves, which makes a big difference for both brides and their teams.

The outdoor ceremony space is even more stunning in person. With a pond, soft landscaping, and sweeping Iowa views, it offers a gorgeous natural backdrop that feels both spacious and intimate. If you are hoping for that dreamy golden hour lighting, this venue delivers the kind of soft, flattering glow that makes hair, makeup, and photography shine.

The Bridal Suite: Calm, Bright, and Wedding-Morning Ready

Let’s talk about something every bride knows matters more than you think: the bridal suite. This one is a standout.

It’s spacious enough for hair/makeup, with tons of natural light (translation: your getting-ready photos will be chef’s kiss). It didn’t feel cramped or chaotic — and that makes such a difference when you’re trying to stay calm and soak in those final hours before walking down the aisle.

The groom’s suite had its own charm, too. Comfortable, tucked away, and thoughtfully designed so the guys can hang out and get dressed without feeling like an afterthought.

The Flow of the Day: Seamless and Guest-Friendly

One thing I really appreciated was how well the venue is laid out for a full wedding day — not just the ceremony or the reception separately. The transition from ceremony to cocktail hour to reception was clearly designed with flow in mind.

There’s flexibility here. Whether you’re dreaming of an outdoor Iowa wedding ceremony or something fully indoors with a cozy fall vibe, Wilson’s Orchard & Farm can accommodate. The staff is helpful, detail-oriented, and clearly used to guiding couples through the planning process — which is gold for engaged couples in Iowa looking to simplify their planning.

A Few Quick Answers from My Visit

I brought my venue checklist with me (linked in last week’s post), and I’m happy to share a few answers here for those of you deep in the comparison process:

What’s included in the rental (tables, chairs, linens, décor)?
We include handmade, linen-less 8ft tables and industrial-style chairs for the venue area. We also provide white café-style chairs for the ceremony area. We will do all the setup and teardown of any tables and chairs.

Are there separate spaces for the ceremony and reception — and if so, what’s the flow between them?
The ceremony area is outside down a concrete path that overlooks a picturesque pond. When guests arrive, they can make their way down the concrete path with a cider in hand for the ceremony and then afterward come back up to the venue for cocktail hour and the reception!

Can I tour both suites and see the lighting at the time of day we’ll be getting ready?
Of course! Both of our getting-ready suites are easily accessible from the venue, and during your private tour, you will have access to view both of them.

What’s the backup plan for rain or bad weather?
If there is bad weather, we will set up the ceremony inside!

Are we able to do a rehearsal the night before?
Yes, however, it is based upon availability! If you would like to do the rehearsal dinner the night before, we can book that and you get a 10% discount!

Are there noise or time restrictions for the reception?
The DJ has to be done by 11 p.m. due to a noise ordinance.

Is there room for vendor setup, and what time can they arrive?
Vendors are welcome to set up when the venue opens at 8 a.m. on the day of your wedding. However, on a case-by-case basis, we are able to bring them in earlier or the night before.

Are there hotel or lodging options nearby for guests and vendors?
The closest hotels will be in the West Glen area in West Des Moines, which is 5 minutes away. There are a few Airbnbs in the Middlebrook neighborhood, too!

Can I bring in my own vendors, or do you have a preferred list?
You can bring in your own vendors; however, we do have a list that we have worked with before that are awesome! We do only allow in-house catering except for dessert.

Is there an on-site coordinator on the wedding day? Who and what will they be in charge of and can I bring in my own planner as well?
There is a venue coordinator on-site from 8 a.m. to 12 a.m. on your wedding day. They will assist with all things food and beverage, as well as vendor management, setup and teardown of any tables and chairs, and cleanup! You are always welcome to bring in your own day-of coordinator or wedding planner!

Final Thoughts: Is Wilson’s Orchard & Farm Right for You?

If you’re a newly engaged Iowa bride who wants a wedding that feels grounded, relaxed, and surrounded by nature — but still polished and guest-ready — Wilson’s Orchard & Farm might be your perfect match. It’s beautiful, yes. But more importantly, it’s functional, and that matters more than you might realize at this stage of planning.

After walking the grounds, asking the questions, and imagining myself in the space, I walked away with a sense of calm confidence. This venue is more than just a pretty place — it’s a space that understands weddings, and supports them at every turn.

To any newly engaged Iowa couple feeling overwhelmed by options, here’s my honest advice: add Wilson’s Orchard & Farm to your tour list. You won’t regret it.

XOXO,
Stacia
