A Conversation with Morgan Dodds
Hey Bride,
Last week, I introduced you to Morgan Dodds, the talented bridal makeup artist based in Central Iowa who travels anywhere love takes her. Today, I’m excited to share her own words with you in our follow-up Q&A.
Morgan has been in the beauty industry for over 15 years and brings both artistry and heart to every wedding she works on. She’s in high demand—her 2025 calendar is nearly full, and 2026 dates are already booking quickly.
Before we dive in, take a moment to see Morgan’s work & follow her here!
Here’s what she had to say when I sent her our list of wedding beauty questions:
What inspired you to become a bridal makeup artist in Iowa?
Well, if we are talking about truth, Iowa was another chapter in our book of places to live. My husband is active-duty military, so Iowa has just been another place to plant roots and carry on my career I started 15 years ago.
How do you balance long-lasting makeup with a natural, soft glam look?
I balance by skin prepping, asking clients their skin types so I can cater my products to benefit their skin and make it long-lasting for them—and of course, you can’t forget the 36-hour setting spray.
What are the biggest mistakes brides make during their bridal makeup trial?
The biggest mistake is having unrealistic expectations and finding highly edited, filtered, or AI pictures, then expecting to look just like that model.
Can you share your go-to “wedding day beauty essential” for brides?
Go-to wedding day essentials would definitely be the under-eye patch and a hydrating serum.
Do you offer airbrush or hypoallergenic makeup for brides with sensitive skin?
With Makeup By Morgan Dodds, I do offer airbrush, and I tend to use clean and/or vegan products on my clients. As a sensitive skin girlie and licensed esthetician, this is very important to me.
What makes you different from other Iowa bridal MUAs—any signature techniques?
I wouldn’t say I am different, but what I can tell you is I am funny, real, sensitive, and I truly care about your goals, and you as a human being—even if that’s giving you a complete skin care regime after your trial. I have given so many high fives, hugs, laughs, advice—you name it, I have definitely done it. This is more than just a career to me. It has led me to meet so many people all over the world, and that makes me feel super special.
How do you collaborate with hairstylists (like me 😉) for a seamless getting-ready vibe?
Open communication is key, plus keeping up with one another along the way—even if that’s tossing out ideas for marketing, new product ideas, and always engaging with the clients during the services. Plus, we can never forget a good playlist and energy drinks.
What trends are you seeing right now in Iowa weddings—and what timeless looks should brides consider?
I am seeing a lot of the “no makeup” looks—but definitely with a lot of makeup on.
What’s the best way for brides to prep their skin in the months before the wedding?
I think this is where the trial comes in, so we can discuss if you need a few facials, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, dermaplaning, or just a simple boost in your water intake.
Any advice for brides who want their makeup to look fresh in photos but not overly done?
Trust your artist—with their skin prepping, products, and the way they set you. And any good artist will send you home with a touch-up kit just in case.
Final Thoughts
Morgan’s mix of honesty, humor, and heartfelt care makes her exactly the kind of makeup artist you want on your wedding day. Whether you’re getting married in Iowa or halfway across the country, she’ll bring her talent and her calming energy straight to your getting-ready room.
XOXO,
Stacia
